في روايتها "جُذور اليام" ترصد الروائية هنوف الحسينان مرحلة الاستعمار البريطاني أواخر القرن التاسع عشر في ساحل الذهب "جمهورية غانا" وعدد من البلدان العربية، ومنها مصر والسودان والكويت في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين. وتفعل الكاتبة ذلك في إطار روائي هو مزيجٌ من الأحداث المقدَّرة على بطل الرواية الطفل "كواكو" والذي لا يملك من قدره شيئاً، ولكنه يحاول تأسيس حياته على أرض صلبة؛ فيخرج من ساحل الذهب حيث عبادة الآلهة والإيمان بالقوى الخارقة إلى مصر أرض الحضارات حيث عبادة الله الواحد والعلم والثقافة. وفي العالم المديني الجديد سيكبر الطفل ليصبح الشاب "هارون" ويتعرف إلى نخبة من الشخصيات الدينية والسياسية والأدبية التي تسهم في ارتقاء شخصيته وثقافته، فيحضر في الرواية طه حسين ومحمد عبده ومصطفى صادق الرافعي وأحمد شوقي باشا والخديوي عباس واللورد كرومر والملك فاروق وجمال عبد الناصر؛ كما يحضر مشهد دحر الاستعمار البريطاني ومأساة النكبة الفلسطينية… وحياة كاملة يخوضها بطل الرواية ويتعلم منها الحكمة والصبر والأدب ويحصد النجاح تلو الآخر، ولكنه يظل متمسكاً بجُذوره، كجذور اليام الممتدة في أعماق الأرض، والمقاومة لكل موجة تحاول انتزاعها.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:
"تشرح لي في كل مرة كاهنة المعبد مصدر ذلك الخوف المرتبط باحترام أرواح ملوكنا التي تقطن بداخلها، تطلب أمي من الكاهنة أن تبارك لها في صوتها فوالدتي تعمل مغنية في الأعراس نهاراً، وفي المآتم ليلاً، ثم نمد أَكفّنا الناعمة ذات اللون الزهري إلى الكاهنة كي تقرأها، تتضايق الكاهنة من مصيري المشؤوم فتقرع الطبول وتضرب الخنازير. (…)، تُحضر الكاهنة التمائم المصنوعة من أوراق اليام وجلود الغزلان، ثم تهمس لوالدتي: "لا يكفي أنَّ اسمه مشؤوم! لماذا مستقبله مليء بالشؤم والجحود؟". تجيب والدتي: "أرجوك ارفعي عنه ذلك".
