يتناول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة الأدبية والفلسفية نظريات المفكر والمنظر المسرحي المصري توفيق الحكيم في الفلسفة والأدب والفن وعلاقة ذلك بمفهومه عن العبث.
إن الفنان الأديب والمفكر عند "الحكيم" إنما يعيش في برج عاجي، والبرج العاجي، في مفهومه هو: "الصفاء الفكري والنقاء الخلقي.. وهو الصخرة التي ينبغي أن يعيش فوقها الكاتب مرتفعاً عن بحر الدنايا الذي يغمر أهل عصره.
ويصل بالحكيم الأمر أن يشبه نفسه والإنسان الأعلى، أو الأديب الفنان بأنه حر، وحريته تخرجه من نطاق النوع البشري وهو في وحدته وحريته يكاد يشبه "لا آدميا من الآدميين".. ويرى "الحكيم" أنه كلما بعد هذا الإنسان عن البشر صعد مراقى الفكر، كلما بدت له الأحداث هزيلة.
