"الأميرة والصعلوك" هى آخر مسرحيات الفريد فرج (1929-2005), وآخر ماعرض له المسرح القومى فى حياته. فى هذه المسرحية التى تجرى أحداثها بالقاهرة فى القرن الثامن عشر, بين أميرة وصعلوك وكتبى وشحاذ, يعبر الكاتب عن رؤيته للعلاقة بين المحبين, ولحق المرأة فى أن تكون كفئا للرجل, ولحيرة الإنسان وماينوء به من معاناة إزاء ما فى الحياة من متناقضات وتمييز وخلط يعوق تقدم المجتمع وتحقيق احلامه فى العدل والحرية, كما يطرح رأيه فى المعرفة والتأليف والرقابة, وفلا كثير من أحوال الدنيا التى لم ينعزل عنها, وظلت تثقل قلبه, وتدفعه للكتابة..
