كان معظم المشيعين، من عَيِّنَةٍ من الناس لم يألف الحي، إستقبالهم، كانوا يمتلكون سيارات فخمة، مهندمون، يتبادلون القبل والعناق فيما بينهم، مرددين بأجمعهم عبارة:
- عزاؤنا واحد.
تجمهر سكان الحي رجالاً ونساءً وأطفالاً، بإستغراب وقد لمحوا، كاميرات التلفزيون، وآلات تسجيل الصحفيين الذين يطوفون على المشيعين يحاورونهم وقد علت وجوههم مسحة من حزن وإكفهرار.
هل هذا الرجل الذي كان يأوي يومياً إلى حجرته البسيطة، متسللاً تحت جنح الظلام مهم إلى هذه الدرجة.
كثيراً ما سخر منه الناس، ونعتوه بالشيخ الأعرج، الذي قد لا يفقه شيئاً، غير أن نشرات الأخبار في الإذاعة والتلفزيون، كانت تنعي رجلاً مثقفاً، ومناضلاً كبيراً، كرس حياته لخدمة قضايا بلاده.
تحدثت الصحف بإسهاب عن نشأته، ومراحل حياته، ومساهماته في تربية النشء وخدمة الناس.
تحدث الكثيرون عن الإهمال الذي لحقه، وعن إزورار، الإعلام عن تسليط الأضواء عليه.
ظهرت بعد مماته، كل الأشياء التي لم يعلمها أحد عنه، طيلة حياته.
