إن المستقري لمؤلفات العرب القدامى، منذ الأوليات إلى ما تلاها، يقف على حقيقة عظمى مناطها أنه لولا ما هو مستودع في شواهدها ما عرفت علوم المتقدمين، وما لهم من أذواق، وسعة علم، وقدرة على إجتياح المتون، وإستنطاقها، وإكتناه كنوزها المعرفية.
ولعل الإنتباه إلى هذه النتيجة هو ما دفع العلماء، منذ قديم إلى الخوض في موضوع الإستشهاد، بالدراسة العلمية - أحياناً - من خلال تبين ديناميته في كتب مسائل النحو، بإعتباره عملية أساس في بناء الدرس النحوي خاصة، والدرس اللغوي والأدبي عامة، ثم بالتأليف في الشواهد ذاتها، لا في الإستشهاد بإعتباره فكرة ومنهجاً في الإيضاح والإستدلال.
ولقد توالت البحوث والدراسات في المستويين معاً إلى عصرنا اليوم بما يفيد أهمية هذا الموضوع، وأحقيته بالعناية والبحث، كيف لا، وهو تجسيد لضرب من ضروب الخطاب القائم بين المؤلف المُسْتَشْهد، وبين النص الخام (الشاهد)، ثم بينهما وبين المتلقي المُسْتَشْهَد له، سواء أكان عالماً متخصصاً أم قارئاً عادياً، إذ المستشهد دائم النظر إلى موقع المُخاطَب أمام كل رؤية تبدو مغلقة أول وهلة حتى يلجأ إلى التفسير أو الإيضاح أو الإحتجاج أو تيسير الفهم وإشباع الدلالة عبر آلة الشاهد.
وقد تمتد هذه العمليات إلى تأويل الحاضر بالغائب كما بدأت بتبيان الغائب بالحار في جهود أمثال ابن عباس، رضي الله عنه، وأبي عبيدة، وغيرهما؛ وإذا كان الإستشهاد متلبساً، في أصله، بالبيان والإحتجاج، فإنه أيضاً مؤسس على الإقناع.
ومن هنا، تجيء أهميته في الدرس النحوي خاصة، والدرس الأدبي عامة، وتزداد هذه الأهمية عند بسط الرؤى، وإنشاء النظريات، إذ لا تستطيع إنكار قدرة الشواهد على مساءلة الرؤى، ومماراة النظريات، إذا ما بحثنا في مناسبة الشاهد للنظر في أي قضية من القضايا النحوية أو النقدية، أو في عدم تحقق تلك المناسبة، بما قد ينبني عليه الخطأ في التقدير، والخطل في التنظير.
