سقط الزند من أعرف كتب أبي العلاء، وأكثرها تداولاً بين المتأدبين والباحثين، وقد تولى تفسيره والقيام عليه في سالف الدهر أئمة فاضلون، بذلوا جهدهم في بيان معانيه، واكتناه أسراره ومراميه، ونحن نسوق بعض هذه الشروح بحسب ترتيبها في التاريخ "شرح أبي العلاء المسمى "ضوء السقط" وضعه لتلميذه أبي عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الأصبهاني، وقد جرت عادة أبي العلاء في كثير من كتبه أن يضع لها تفسيراً يوضح مبهماتها، ومن هذا الشرح نسخة بمكتبة باريس برقم (3111) ، وأبو العلاء لم يشرح جميع سقط الزند، بل أملي شرحه على تلميذه أبي عبد الله إلى "الدرعيات" ومما هو جدير بالذكر أن التبريزي تلميذ المعري قد التزم - كما ذكر في خطبته - أن يضمن تفسيره ما ورد في ضوء السقط، وقد نبه في كثير من مواضع الشرح على هذا الإقتباس، كما نجد في أثناء شرحه بعضاً من النقد والتعقيب لضوء السقط، ونجد أيضاً في زوايا شرحي البطليوسي والخوازمي بعض النصوص المقتبسة من الضوء".
شرح السيد البطليوسي المتوفي سنة 521، وليس هذا الشرح خاصاً بسقط الزند، بل ضم مؤلفه إليه طائفة أخرى من شعر أبي العلاء بعضها نم لزوم ما لا يلزم، وبعضها الآخر من سائر دواوين أبي العلاء، كما يصرح بذلك من مواضع الشرح، وقد إنفرد البطليوسي من الشراح بترتيب سقط الزند على حروف المعجم، وشرح صدر الأفاضل قاسم بن الحسين بن محمد الخوارزمي، وهذا الشرح يمتاز بعمق غوصه على أسرار معاني أبي العلاء، حتى إنه ليغرق في ذلك إغراقاً، كما أنه يمتاز بالتعرض للإشارات التاريخية والإسراف في سردها، وعرض كذلك "قليل من فقه الشافعي وأحاديث النبي وفوائد التفسير" ، وقد أولع بالموازنة بين شعر أبي العلاء وشعر جمال العرب الأبيوردي.
