لقد مرت تلك الحقبة الكبرى من الفلسفة المعاصرة، حقبة سارتر وميلوبونتي، حيث كان على نص فلسفي، أو نص نظري ما، أن يعطيك، في النهاية، معنى الحياة والموت ومعنى الحياة الجنسية، ويقول لك هل الله موجود أم لا، وما تكون الحرية، وما ينبغي عمله في الحياة السياسية، وكيف تتصرف مع الآخرين، الخ. لقد تكون لدينا انطباع بأنه لم يعد ممكناً اليوم ترويج مثل هذه الفلسفة، وبأن الفلسفة قد تكون في حال تشتت إن لم تكن قد تبخرت (فعلاً)، وبـأن ثمة عملاً نظرياً يغلب عليه، بشكل أو بآخر، طابع التعدد، وهكذا فالنظرية والنشاط الفلسفي يظهران في ميادين يظهر في مجال ميدان الأسطورة أو في ميدان تاريخ الديانات أو في ميدان التاريخ عامة، الخ. وفي هذا النوع من تعدد العمل النظري إنما تكتمل، في النهاية، فلسفة لم تجد بعد مفكرها الوحيد وخطابها الموحد.
ليس دور المثقف هو أن يقول للآخرين ماذا يتعين عليهم فعله، وبأي حق سيفعل ذلك؟ تذكروا كل النبوءات والوعود والأوامر والبرامج التي كان المثقفين أن يصوغوها خلال القرنين الأخيرين، والتي رأينا الآن آثارها، ليس عمل المثقف هو أن يشكل الإرادة السياسية للآخرين، وإنما يكمن عمله في التحاليل التي يقوم بها لميادين هي ميادينه، وف إعادة مساءلة البديهيات والمسلمات، وزعزعة العادات وطرق العمل والتفكير، كما يكمن في تبديد الأمور المألوفة المقبولة، وإعادة النظر في القواعد والمؤسسات، مع المساهمة، انطلاقاً من عملية إعادة الأشكلة هذه (التي يؤدي فيها وظيفته النوعية باعتباره مثقفاً) في تشكيل إرادة سياسية (عليه أن يلعب فيها دوره كمواطن).
