أصبح مفهوم الانفصال يحتل مكانة كبرى في فروع المعرفة التاريخية، ذلك أن التاريخ في ثوبه الكلاسيكي، كان يفترض الانفصال معطى لكنه غير قابل لأن يفكر فيه. فالانفصال كان له علاقة التشتت الزماني الذي كانت تلقى على عاتق المؤرخ تبيان حذفه من التاريخ؛ لكنه غدا اليوم أحد العناصر الأساسية للتحليل التاريخي.
في هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب حيث يبحث ميشال فوكو من خلال فصوله في الشكل الأكبر الذي يعترض هذا النوع من التحليل التاريخي والذي لن يبقى متمحوراً في معرفة السبل التي سلكتها الاستمراريات لكي تنشأ، ولا الكيفية التي تمكن نفس المصير أن يبقى هو هو، ويرسم أفقاً واحداً تنخرط فيه عقول متباينة متعاقبة، إلى جانب ذلك أيضاً لن يبقى المشكل، في التحليل التاريخي الآني المطلوب، معرفة كيف استطاع أن يبسط سيادته ويمتد خارج ذاته حتى ذلك الاكتمال الذي لا يتحقق إطلاقاً، لن يعود المشكل مشكل التراث والآثار، وإنما مشكل الفصل والحدّ ومشكل التحولات التي تعمل كتأسيس وتجديد للتأسيس.
ويطرح فوكو على ضوء هذه المعطيات أسئلة والتي صار بعضها متداولاً والتي يسعى عن طريقها هذا النوع الجديد من التاريخ أن يقيم نظريته الخاصة. هذه الأسئلة هي: كيف نعين مختلف المفاهيم التي تسمح بالتفكير في الانفصال (كمفاهيم الفصل والقطيعة والتقلب والتحول؟) وفق أية مقاييس سيتم الفصل بين الوحدات التي هتم بها: فما الذي يحد علماً ما من العلوم أو مؤلفاً من المؤلفات أو نظرية أو مفهوماً أو نصاً؟ وكيف نعمل على تنويع المستويات التي يمكن أن نضع فيها أنفسنا والتي ينطوي كل منها على تقطيعاته الخاصة وشكل تحليله: ما المستوى المشروع للصياغة الصورية؟ ما مستوى التأويل؟ ما مستوى التحليل البنيوي؟ ما مستوى تعيين اقتران العلل بالمعلولات؟ فلسفة معرفية للتاريخ جديدة يتناولها فوكو من خلال الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة على صفحات هذا الكتاب.
