يواجه الفكر العربيّ اليوم أسئلة أثارتها التحوّلات الهامّة التي تمرّ بها المجتمعات العربيّة. هي أسئلة ذات علاقة مباشرة بمعايير الانتظام في المجتمع الواحد، وبين المجتمعات، وفق ما تقتضيه المكاسب القيميّة الإنسانيّة. وفي صدارة هذه الأسئلة سؤال إدارة الاختلاف في مختلف أبعاده، وخاصّة منها البعد الثقافي والمعرفي المتعلّق بالاعتقاد وبالرؤى المذهبيّة والفكريّة. ويكاد مفهوم التسامح الذي طرِح حلاً للإشكالات الناجمة عن التعدّد والاختلاف، يحظى بإجماع كونيّ وإن تعدّدت تمثّلاته ومنطلقات القبول به والدعوة إليه. وفي الفكر العربي المعاصر، ما فتئ يكتسي أهمّيّة متزايدة بحكم ما تقتضيه الأوضاع الاجتماعيّة والثقافيّة والسياسيّة من تعديلات وبدائل، وبحكم علاقته المباشرة بالتحوّلات الدلاليّة لمفاهيم يلتقي معها في ذات المدار، وهي مفاهيم «الدولة» و«المواطنة» و«الحريّة» و«الهويّة» و«الحقيقة». ويظلّ الفكر الذي يجدّد أدواته ويراجع مفاهيمه، متفاعلاً مع كلّ التحوّلات التي يشهدها الواقع، ومنفتحاً على التطوّر المطّرد لمكتسبات المعرفة الكونيّة، فكراً منتجاً يثبت باستمرار حيويّته وانخراطه الفاعل في التحليل النقديّ للماضي والحاضر، بهدف تحديد معالم أفضل للآتي. فلا بناءَ لجديد على أرضيّة تنبو عنه، ولا آفاق واعدة لمشروع فكريّ لا يتأصّل في واقعه. وقيمة التسامح -بما تنهض به من دلالات الحقّ في الاختلاف، والاعتراف بالآخر، واحترامه- هي شرط من شروط البناء الديمقراطي والتوطئة لآتٍ يكون أفضل، وضعفُ حضورها ماضياً وحاضراً سببٌ من أسباب التنامي الخطير لظواهر التعصّب والعنف..
