تهدف مؤلفة هذا الكتاب إلي عرض نظريات الخطاب وما تعلق بها من جدال بين المفكرين المحدثين عرضاً نقدياً، فتواجه منذ البداية جملة من الأسئلة الأساسية المتعلقة بمفهوم الخطاب وأنواعه، وتعارضه دائماً مع خطابات أخري، واختلافه من موضع إلي موضع، ومن سياق إلي آخر، ومن طبقة إجتماعية إلي أخري، وغير ذلك من الأسئلة التي فرضت نفسها علي الفكر الغربي ( في فرنسا بصفة أساسية) في حقبة الستينيات والسبعينيات من هذا القرن، انطلاقاً من منطقة البحث في المعني، حيث تحول التفكير من البحث في طبيعة المعاني إلي البحث في الكيفيات التي يتم بها تشكيل هذه المعاني.
وقد كان البحث في الخطاب عنذئذ هو المجال الذي يستهدف الكشف عن هذه الكيفيات، والوقوف علي الدوافع الموجهة لها، والوظائف التي تحققها؛ ففي نطاق الخطابات المختلفة تنشأ المفاهيم والاستراتيجيات المختلفة.
وإذا كانت النزعة الإنسانية قد رأت في الأدب تعبيراً عن تجربة إنسانية مباشرة وجوهرية ومكتملة، وكانت مفاهيم البنيوية وما بعد البنيوية قد عارضت هذا التصور ونفت ان يكون الأدب تعبيراً عن هذه التجربة أو أنعكاساً لها، فإن الدراسة الحديثة للخطاب قد اتجهت إلي تحليل الخطابات المختلفة في الأطر المؤسساتية التي تمارس فيها هذه الخطابات، ومنها الخطاب الأدبي، للوقوف علي الآثار التي تنجم عن هذه الخطابات، والظروف الخاصة بمن يمارسونها، والمؤسسات الخاصة التي تمارس فيها، والقوة التي تكتسبها او تمارسها خلال ذلك، ومن هنا تأتي اهمية هذا الكتاب.
