يحاول هذا الكتاب الكشف عن دور المساندة الاجتماعية فى التخفيف من الشعور بالوحدة النفسية لدى المسنين, حيث إنهم أكثر فئة عمرية فى حاجة لكافة أنواع المساندة الاجتماعية عندما يتسبب العجز فى زيادة الاعتمادية لديهم, كما يتناول الكتاب المتغيرات الاجتماعية المرتبطة والمساندة الاجتماعية والشعور بالوحدة النفسية والتى تشكل الفروق بين المتقاعدين.
ولهذه الدراسة فائدة تطبيقية فى الوقاية وتقليل الحوداث التى يمكن ان تصاب بالشعور بالوحدة النفسية فى فئة المسنين باكتشاف المجموعات المستهدفة, كما يمكن إعدادا علاج إرشادى للحالات التى تعانى من الوحدة النفسية من المسنين بغض النظر عن مركزه الاجتماعى ووضعه الحالى من العمل وعمره وذلك بتصميم برامج إرشادية تتضمن مشاركة فى أنشطة اجتماعية واهتمامات ومصادر اجتماعية ومساندة اجتماعية بأبعادها التى تضمنها الكتاب.
