تحتل دراسة تواريخ المدن أهمية خاصة في الدراسات التاريخية ومن المصادر المهمة التي اهتم المؤرخون الأوائل بها وعنوا بتدوينها التواريخ المحلية (تواريخ المدن) التي ألفها رجال من هذه المدينة أو تلك. وكانت بعض المدن الإسلامية والأمصار العربية موضع اهتمام وتقدير قسماُ من مؤرخيها الذين نشأوا أو ولدوا فيها أو سكنوها فكان أن خطي (اقليم خراسان) باهتمام بالغ من لدن المؤرخين العرب الذين سكنوا في أمصاره أو ولدوا في مدنه.
لذلك أصبحت تواريخ مدن خراسان ذات أهمية خاصة في الدراسات التاريخية واحتلت قيمتها العلمية والفكرية مكاناً بارزاً في التدوين التاريخي إلى درجة لا يمكن معها الإستغناء عنها في معرفة الوقائع السياسية والأحداث التاريخية لهذه المدن، بل إنها صارت تكون جزءاً هاماً ومتمماً لا يستغنى عنه في رسم الإطار أو استكمال الرواية التاريخية للتراث العربي عامة وتاريخ خراسان خاصة.
وعليه، نقع في هذا الكتاب على دراسة تاريخية تتضمن التواريخ المحلية لإقليم خراسان [تواريخ المدن] كما وردت عند المؤرخين العرب كالمسعودي والبغدادي، وآخرون من علماء خراسان ومحدثيهم الذين وفدوا على بغداد مثل السخاوي وحاجي خليفة وآخرون، مع الإشارة إلى أهم الفتوح وأشهر قوادها وأمرئها من العرب الذين دخلوها وكتبوا تاريخها، وما تحفل به المدونات من ذكر للعوائل الحاكمة التي خضعت لها مدن وكتبوا تاريخها، وما تحفل به المدونات من ذكر للعوائل الحاكمة التي خضعت لها مدن خراسان من الطاهريين والصفاريين والساميين والغزنويين السلاجقة وغيرهم من الأسر التي أقامت في خراسان حكم دويلات وراثية لها، بالإضافة إلى بعض الإشارات العابرة التي تختص بالجوانب الزراعية والصناعية والمالية الأخرى كالأنهار والضياع والبساتين وخراج المدينة، مع ذكر لبعض أصحاب الصنائع والحرف وأصنافهم وحركاتهم...
