يضم هذا الديوان الشرقى, للشاعر الغربى (وهو شاعر الألمان الأكبر جوته 1749- 1832) أكثر من ثلاثمائة قصيدة من أعذب شعره النابع من تجارب حياته الباطنية الحميمة. ومن تجربة حب عاصفة مر بها بعد أن جاوز الستين: لشاعرة رقيقة فى ربيع العمر. التى يسميها فى الديوان باسم زليخا. كما سمى نفسه باسم حاتم.
وهذا الديوان الذى وزع الشاعر قصائده على اثنى عشر كتابا. يعد رحلة روحية فى آفاق الشرق الإسلامى وادابه. لاسيما الأدبين العربى والفارسى, أراد بها أن يسترد شبابه الوجدانى, ويجدد ينابيع إبداعه الشعرى, الذى كان قد بدأ يعانى من الفتور والسأم والاختناق وسط دخان المعارك الدائرة فى بلاده للتحرر من قبضة نابليون. لذلك وصف رحلته الروحية بأنها هجرته إلى الشرق الطاهر, حيث الحب والحق والصفاء. وحيث يستروح نسيم الآباء. ويستمع إلى كلماتهم التى كانت وحيا من السماء بلغات الأرض, ويصحب القواف التى تعبر الصحارى. وينعم بصحبة شعراء الشرق الذين قدرهم واستلهم أشعارهم. مثل: حافظ الشيرازى. وعبد الرحمن الجامعى, وامرئ القيس, وشعراء الحب العذرى مثل جميل بثينة وكثير عزة.
