يتحدث الكتاب عن حياة خمسة فلاسفة من عصور وثقافات وحضارات مختلفة يجمعهم حالة الموت بأشكال مختلفة بسبب السياسة التي اصطدمت أفكارهم بها- الاغتيال كان نصيب "سقراط اليوناني" الذي يؤمن بأن طاعة القوانين والعدالة شيء واحد ولم تسلم الحكومة والحكام من نقده- الفيلسوف "سينكا الروماني" والذي تأثر بفلسفة "أفلاطون" مؤمنًا بأن الحكيم عليه الحياة بين البشر ويكون منصفًا، تتلمذ على يديه "نيرون" وكان مثالًا طيبًا ثم انقلب على أفكاره وتحقق حلم "نيرون" في الخلاص منه- الفيلسوفة "هيباثيا" التي عاشت في الاسكندرية فترة تحول الامبراطورية البيزنطية إلى المسيحية وقتلت ببشاعة بسبب الدين- الفيلسوف المقتول "السهروردي" عاش فترة الناصر صلاح الدين وسقوط عكا في يد الصليبيين وقتل لاتهامة بالإلحاد- "المهاتا غاندي" في القرن العشرين.. ولأن الفلسفة عنده أصبحت دينًا يعاش فجاء اغتياله نتيجة التعصب العرقي والاستعمار.
