تعد دراسة الحياة العسكرية عند العرب قبل الإسلام من الموضوعات المهمة في تاريخ العرب قبل الإسلام وبعد ظهوره، وذلك لأن الحروب التي خاضها العرب فيما بينهم أعطت العربي قوة، وروحاً قتالية، وخبرة حربية، فلما جاء الإسلام أفاد من هذه الطاقات ونظمها، وهذا الوعي للظروف الحربية السائدة آنذاك كان الدافع الأول باتجاه اختيار الموضوع للدراسة، والسبب الآخر هو عدم وجود دراسة أكاديمية مستقلة تدرس التاريخ العسكري للعرب قبل الإسلام. وإن ما يدعو للأسف أن المؤرخين المسلمين كانوا يتحاشون ويقللون من أخبارهم وقصصهم حول الفترة التي سبقت الإسلام، ويبدو أن ذلك كان تعصباً منهم للإسلام، ونبذاً لكل ما كان من كفر وشرك، فلم يتطرقوا إلى أخبار العرب قبل الإسلام إلا النزر اليسير.
إن معظم المصادر والدراسات التي تناولت أيام العرب في تلك الفترة اكتفت بالتعرض لهذا الموضوع بشكل مقتضب، لذا فإن هناك غموضاً كبيراً يحيط بهذا الجانب.
من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب في مقدمة وأربعة فصول وخاتمة.
تناول الفصل الأول منها العوامل المؤثرة في الحياة العسكرية لدى العرب
وجاء الفصل الثاني عن تنظيم الجيوش وقد شمل مبحثين.
أما الفصل الثالث فأخذ عنوان أساليب القتال والنظم العسكرية، وقد تم في هذا الفصل إبراز ما للعرب من دور تعبوي وأساليب قتالية عالية جداً شبيهة بالأساليب القتالية لدى الأمم المجاورة.
ومايخص الفصل الرابع المتعلق بالأسلحة، فكان عن امتلاك العربي للسلاح، وكيف يعده مكملاً لشخصيته، وسبباً من أسباب الإحساس بالأمن والطمأنينة ويجد في حيازته ما يخفف عنه شعوره بالقلق.
