موضوع هذا الكتاب هو أثر مضمون الحياة والموت في بناء القصيدة في شعر بدر شاكر السّيّاب، وهذا الموضوع ينطوي على أهمية كبيرة بالنسبة لدراسة شعر السّيّاب، كما هو الحال بالنسبة للشعر العربي الحديث كله، حيث يظهر بعض ملامح طبيعة شعر السّيّاب؛ وهي الملامح الفنية المتكئة على قالب الحياة والموت في بناء النص الشعري.
وعليه، يحاول في هذه الدراسة الكشف عن السمات والملامح الملاحظة في صور الحياة والموت في شعره، بما في ذلك الصور الجزئية والصور الكلية، والرموز الأسطورية، وصور التراث، والصور الدينية، وغيرها من الصور التي تساهم في تشكيل قصيدة السّيّاب.
من هنا، تسعى من وراء تلك إلى تبيّن طبيعة صور الحياة والموت في شعره، وأكثر من ذلك فإنه يحاول الكشف عن المنهجية أو نمط خاص في تشكيل صور الحياة والموت، وتحقيقاً لهذه الغاية فقد عمدت المؤلف إلى تصنيف المضامين الشعرية التي تحدّث السّيّاب عنها، وهي مضمون المرأة، والمضمون السياسي، ومضمون القرية والمدينة، ومضمون المرض.
وقد عمد إلى كشف القالب الفني التي يتكئ عليه السياب في رصده لهذه المضامين؛ حيث تتبَّع صور الحياة والموت في كل مضمون شعري على إنفراد محاولاً كشف نمط فني خاص لبنى صور الحياة والموت فيه، ومدى تطور هذه البنى أو ثباتها، وتحقيقاً لذلك فقد حاول الكشف عن الصورة العامة والجزئية، والرموز الأسطورية والدينية والصور التراثية في نصوصه.
