ظهرت هذه الدراسات في أوقات متفرقة في عدد من المجلات الثقافية والأدبية مثل "المجلة" و"الفكر المعاصر" و"تراث الإنسانية" و"الجديد" والملحق الأدبي "للهلال" وكما ظهر بعضها لإحياء ذكرى روائي بالذات أو حدث أدبي معين، فقد ظهر بعضها في عدد يعالج موضوعاً بعينه. ومن هنا اتسم بعضها بالإيجاز والتركيز بينما اتسم بعضها الآخر بقدر أكبر من الإفاضة والشمول.
وبالرغم مما قد يبدو من عدم الترابط بينها، إلا أنها جميعاً تقدم نماذج من الأدب الروائي الجيد، الذي تتحد فيه الرؤيا الإنسانية بالأسلوب الفني المتميز من ناحية وتمثل لارتباط الأدب بالحياة من ناحية أخرى.
وتقدم الفصول الأربعة الأولى نماذج لتطور الرواية في فتراتها المختلفة هي فترة مولد فني أدبي جديد على يد أحد رواده الأول هو دانيال ديفو ثم نموذج لفترة النضج على يد روائي كبير هو تشارلز ديكنز، ثم بعض ما شغلت الرواية الحديثة والمعاصرة ذاتها به من مشاكل الفرد في العصر الحديث ومن استحداث لأساليب فنية تتفق وما تعالجه من موضوعات.
أما الفصل الخامس فهو محاولة للمقارنة بين نشأة الرواية الغربية والرواية المصرية للكشف عن تشابه الظروف التي نشأت فيها كل منهما. أما الفصول الأخرى فتعالج بعض التيمات والأساليب الفنية التي يستخدمها الروائي أو الشاعر ا, الكاتب المسرحي لتصوير الحياة الإنسانية في شتى صورها.
