تشكل الفصول التى نقدمها فى هذا الكتاب عدداً من الدراسات التى إما سبق أن ألقيت فى مؤتمرات أدبية ثم نشر بعضها وإما أبحاث نشرت جزئياً ثم أكملت بهدف نشرها فى صورتها الحالية. وتأتى هذه الدراسات فى الرواية العربية من منطلق اهتمام الدارس المتخصص فى أحد الآداب الأجنبية، وهو الأدب الإنجليزى فى هذه الحالة - بالأدب القومى جنباً إلى جنب مع الأدب الأجنبى، بحيث يتاح إلقاء بعض الضوء على جوانب الأدب القومى من وجهة نظر عالمية. وتدور هذه الدراسات حول الرواية العربية فى مصر، بداية من الإرهاصات الأولى فى المقامات الحديثة لمحمد المويلحى وحافظ إبراهيم وأعمال الجيل الأول من الرواد مثل طه حسين وتوفيق الحكيم ثم فى بعض أعمال من تلاهم كبار الروائيين مثل نجيب محفوظ ويوسف إدريس، مع التركيز على الربط بين بعض الجوانب الأدبية والعوامل الإجتماعية المؤثرة من ناحية، وبعض النواحى التقنية الفعالة من ناحية أخرى، وكلا الأمرين من النواحى التى يهتم بها دارسو الرواية فى هذه الفترة المعاصرة. فبينما يزداد الإهتمام بعلاقة الأدب بالمجتمع، يزداد أيضاً الإهتمام بالدور الذى تلعبه اللغة بتشكيلاتها المختلفة فى العمل الأدبى.
