إن العمود الذي يقوم عليه هذا الكتاب مجموعة من النصوص التي تلقطها الدكتور إبراهيم السامرائي من بعض مصادر التراث العربي الأصيلة، ولم يتركها هكذا بلا ضابط يضبطها، بل تعامل معها على وفق منهج واضح ووقفات متكررة.
أما المنهج فيراد به ذلك المعيار الذي تم بموجبه إختيار تلك النصوص، وهو معيار دقيق لجأ إليه الدكتور السامرائي ليثبت فرضية هو مقتنع بها، وهي إثبات العلاقة بين الأدب والتاريخ، فالأدب - برأيه - قادر على توثيق الحادثة التاريخية، والدخول إلى تفاصيلها الدقيقة، وهو ما تغفله - عادة - كتب التاريخ المعتبرة، ولهذا عمد، لإثبات ما تقدم، إلى تلك النصوص المنتقاة فكشف من خلالها جوانب نستطيع تسميتها بــ [تاريخ ما أهمله التاريخ]، وأما الوقفات فيراد بها تلك التعليقات المفيدة التي قيدها على تلك النصوص، لتصبح أشبه بالحواشي التوضيحية عليها دعماً لذلك المنهج الذي اعتمده، وقد شملت تلك التعليقات مناحي ثقافية، ولغوية، وحضارية حفظتها تلك النصوص، وجاءت التعليقات لتكشف جوانب كانت مغيبة، وأضاءت زوايا لم يصلها نور البحث بعد، كل ذلك بأسلوب راق، وموضوعية راسخة، مما يجعل هذا الكتاب إضافة طيبة إلى مكتبة درس التراث العربي بنظرة جديدة.
