يتناول الباحث الدكتور "أحمد إسماعيل النعيمي" في دراسته للشعر العربي قبل الإسلام دراسة (القبيلة في الشعر العربي قبل الإسلام). ويما أن الأدب يجسّد الواقع الإجتماعي المعيشي، انصبت هذه الدراسة على القبيلة بوصفها وحدة إجتماعية وإقتصادية وسياسية مستقلة لم يرَ العربي أفقاً أوسع منها نادراً، ولم يخضع لغيرها من التنظيمات الإجتماعية الأخرى ومن ضمنها أسرته لتجاوز العرب دور الأسرة إلى دور القبيلة، لعوامل شتى كان للشعر دوره وتأثيره في نظامها.
سوف نتعرّف في هذه الدراسة كيف تكاملت الصيغة الفنية للقصيدة الجاهلية من حيث الدقة في الوزن وفي التركيب والأسلوب والهيكل الذي تُبنى عليه القصيدة.
تأتي هذه الدراسة الأدبية الهامة في خمسة فصول ومباحث وخاتمة. يرتكز الفصل الأول على دراسة القبيلة من جوانب عدة، المعنى اللغوي، الإصطلاحي، التاريخي، الأسري، ثم يعرج في مبحث خاص إلى تكوين القبيلة الطبقي. أما الفصل الثاني فتكفل تبيان منزلة الشعر وأثره في حياة القبائل العربية. وفي الفصل الثالث يتحدث الكاتب عن مكانة الشاعر ودوره في الحياة القبلية، وأثر الإنتماء القبلي في حياة الشاعر، وانعكاساته على نماذجه الشعرية، ويختار (الخطيئة) نموذجاً للدراسة. وفي الفصل الرابع، عرض لملامح الشخصية القبلية في أغراض الشعر التقليدية، ومنها استجابات الشاعر لواقع الإنتماء الطبقي، والمقيدة بالإلتزام القبلي، نذكر من أغراض الشعر مثلاً الحماسة والفخر، والهجاء، والمديح، والحكمة، والتي تعبر عن هذا الإلتزام. ويأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير ليبحث في الخصائص الفنية في القصيدة الجاهلية ذات الغرض القبلي المباشر، والذي يعطي صورة جلية عن سمات ذلك النتاج الخصب من الشعر الذي بقي نموذجاً يُحتذى ومثالاً لكل شعراء العصور اللاحقة. وأخيراً خاتمة يبرز فيها الكاتب أهم النتائج التي توصلت إليها الدراسة.
