طال ما رأيت في العصر العباسي الحقبة المثالية من بين سائر حقب التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، في مختلف مناحي الحياة وميادينها، لا استثني من ذلك سوى عصر النبوة والخلفاء الراشدين من بعده، الذي لم تكن الحقبة العباسية إلا ثمرة يانعة من ثماره، ومرحلة متقدمة من مراحل تطوره ونضجه، وحالة من الوحدة في التنوع لم تشهدها الأمة من قبل ولا من بعد، فلم يشهد عصر من عصور الأمة - فيما أحسب - ما شهده مسرح الحياة العباسية المترامي الأطراف سعة، والمشرع الأبواب إنفتاحاً، والمتسع الصدر قوة وحرية، والرحب الآفاق فكراً وتسامحاً، مما يجعله عصراً مغرياً لأي دارس في أية ظاهرة من ظواهر النشاط الإنساني، أو أي مجال من مجالات الحياة البشرية، فقد اجتمعت فيه المتناقضات، واستوعبت خشبته الرحبة المتنافرات، مع محافظته في كثير من الاحيان على هُوية الأمة ورسالتها.
فلقد تهيأ لذلك العصر من النفوذ السياسي والعسكري ما جعله يحتل موقع الصدارة بين دول العالم وقومياته آنذاك، وأن يكون موهوب الجانب، صعب العريكة، تحسب له الحسابات، وتعُقد معه الإتفاقات، ومن الوعي المعرفي والثقافي ما مكّنه من الإطلاع على حضارات الأمم الأخرى، وثقافتها وعلومها، وأن يفيد من ذلك كله، ويصهره في ثقافة عربية إسلامية لا تعرف الحدود ولا تشعر إزاء ذلك بحرج أو أما أمنه وإستقراره فقد أتاح لأتباع الديانات السماوية والوضعية، ولأصحاب المذاهب الفقهية، والأحزاب السياسية، ولأبناء القوميات المتعددة الجنسيات، أن تتعايش معاً، وأن يحاور بعضها الآخر، في أجواء من الحرية والبعد عن التعصب أحياناً، وفي أجواء من الصراع أحياناً أخرى.
إن تضافر تلك الظروف لذلك العصر جعلته يحفل بالخلفاء العظام، والقادة الأبطال، والعلماء الذين لا يشق لهم غبار، والأدباء والشعراء الذين تركوا لنا تراثاً أدبياً وشعرياً هائلاً، مما يدعونا إلى معاودة قراءة ذلك العصر بكل معطياته، علّنا نجد فيه، ما يعيد لهذه الأمة حياتها وبهاءها.
