يُعدُّ هذا الكتاب مجدداً في بحوثه، التي لا ترى في تاريخ الأديان ترفاً ذهنياً في قضايا ماضية، إنما هو بحث في قضايا العصر المرتبطة بالأديان، وفهم للحاضر من خلال فهم تعقيدات الماضي.
اتخذ المؤلف زيارة المراقد، والأضرحة، والمقامات الشيعية، مسلكاً لمتابعة مراحل صناعة الذاكرة، فدرس نشأتها، وتطورها، وأحكامها، ووظائفها، ودلالاتها. فقام بتفكيك نصوص الزيارة، باعتبارها ذاكرة خطابيّة، ومنظومة تواصليّة، وذلك بالتركيز على عدد من وظائفها، ودلالاتها السياسية، والعقدية، والفكرية، وما أسهمت به في الدفاع عن هويّة المذهب الشيعي، وصناعة ذاكرة الجماعة وصيانتها.
كما بيَّن أهم الوظائف الاجتماعيّة لزيارة المراقد، وقارن بين الحج في الإسلام والزيارة الشيعيّة، للوقوف على أوجه التماثل والتمايز، حتى يتسنّى لنا تحديد العلاقة بين الأصل والفرع، أو بين الإسلام والتشيّع. التزم الباحث الحياد التام، وهو يعالج موضوعه بالجمع بين المعاينة الميدانية، وآليات تحليل الخطاب المرتكز على معطيات موضوعية موثقة، وقابلة للتثبت.
إنّ أهمية العمل تبرز، أساساً، في روحه التي تقطع قطعاً مع كتابات التمجيد أو النقض السائدة في ثقافتنا، ولا سيما إذا تعلق الأمر بالنزاع الشيعي السني القديم المتواصل، وهذه الروح هي التي ينبغي أن تنتشر في مجتمعاتنا، فيسهم العلم في تحقيق التعايش بين البشر، دون أن يضحّي بأركانه المتمثلة في الدقة، والموضوعية، والحياد، والكونية.
