عبد الحليم حافظ اليتيم العصامي الذي رضع الأحزان مع الحليب المر من أثدية لا هوية لها فأصبح ابناً للجميع فكان ابناً باراً. لقد أعطى لمصر بفلاحيها وعمالها وشبابها... أعطى للعرب من المحيط إلى الخليج عصارة قلبه ومشاعره وشبابه. لقد كان لسان الإنسان العربي وضميره... غنى لفرحه... غنى لآلامه... غنى لانتصاراته... غنى من أجل تجاوز انكساراته... أعطى الأمل ولم يعط السراب... أعطى الصدق ولم يعط الوهم. وأنت تستمع إليه تحس بتلك النكهة المميزة للأرض المعطاء وذلك الحزن المعتق الذي تعايش معه وسايره بل واتكأ عليه في معظم الأحيان، حتى أصبح وهذه الأحزان صنوان لا يفترقان، وكوّن معها حروفاً من كلمات لها أكثر من معنى.
ومثلما عرف عبد الحليم النجاح عرف الإحباط والفشل ولكنه كان بإصراره وجهده يحوله شيئاً فشيئاً إلى عطاء متسام، ومن يستمع إلى أغانيه يشعر بسلسلة مترابطة من مرثية طويلة رثى بها نفسه، لذا فإن سيرة حياة عبد الحليم وفنه توأمان لا ينفصلان فكل منهما يكمل الآخر ويكتمل به ومن ثم يعبر عنه.
ومن خلال هذا الكتاب سيحاول المؤلف "الجوادي" الكشف عن قيمة ما أعطاه هذا الفنان واضافه لواحد من أجمل الفنون وأقر بها إلى دواخل البشر، كما سيشير أيضاً إلى ما أعطته له الحياة... وما أخذت منه... وكيف استطاع بعصاميته وصبره أن ينتصر على الزمن... وأن يجد نفسه وبعيد اكتشافها... متخطياً بذلك مرضه.
وإثراءً لمضمون الكتاب، وتوسعاً في البحث عنى المؤلف بتضمين كتابه نص كافة الأغنيات التي غناها عبد الحليم بالإضافة إلى بعض النصوص التي دونتها الصحف والمجلات العربية وغير العربية عن عبد الحليم، وهدفه إلقاء الضوء ومن زوايا متعددة على حياة وسيرة "العندليب الأسمر" قبل وبعد وفاته.
