لا يتسع المقام في هذه المقدمة المختصرة تفصيل مسألة تأثير المؤلفين العرب منذ القرن التاسع عشر بهذا النهج، ومحاولات عدد كبير منهم وضع تأريخ للأدب العربي، ومن أولى هذه المحاولات محاولة حسن توفيق العدل وضع تأريخ للأدب العربي، ومن أولى هذه المحاولات محاولة حسن توفيق العدل في تاريخ آداب اللغة العربية، ومحاولة جرجي زيدان ومحالوة الرافعي وغيرهم. ومن العروض الحديثة للمستشرقين التي استحسنتها ذلك العرض الذي قدمه ايفالدفاجنر في كتابه "أسس الشعر العربي الكلاسيكي" جـ1، جـ2 الذي حاول فيه أن يقدم تصوراً شاملاً لبعض قضايا الشعر العربي يبرز فيها وجهة نظرة تجاه هذه القضايا المطروحة في الكتاب، ويلاحظ هنا أساساً أنه لا يهدف إلى وضع مؤلف شامل في مراحل الأدب العربي يستقصي فيه جميع الشعراء والناثرين والكتاب وكل أشكال الإبداع في الأدب العربي منذ العصر الجاهلي مثلاً إلى العصر الحديث، بل أراده عرضاً يتوقف عند بعض القضايا والظواهر التي رأى يتوقف عندها وأن يدلى فيها بدلوه. ومن ثم فإني أرى أن عرضه يتسم بخصوصيات معينة منها: اختياره أن يسير التأريخ وفق ترتيب زمني محدد صرح به منذ البداية، واختياره أن يتتبع بعض الأنساق الشكلية والمضمونية في الشعر خاصة، ويرصد تطورها عبر مراحل زمنية ممتدة، وتغليب الموضوعية والحياد ما أمكن ذلك في معالجة القضايا التي اهتم بطرحها للمناقشة، وعدم الاكتفاء بآراء المستشرقين فيها، بل الأخذ بآراء النقاد العرب القدامى والمحدثين في الاعتبار، وهو مايدل بوضوح على تحوله عن منهج كثير من المستشرقين ومعرفة واسعة بأهم ما ألف من دراسات جادة حول الشعر العربي.
