يمثل الخطاب (مجموعة من النصوص ذات العلاقات المشتركة) أو هو (جملة من المنطوقات أو التشكلات الأدائية التي تنظم في سلسلة معينة لتنتج - على نحو تأريخي - دلالة ما، وتحقق أثراً معيناً)، وهو بذلك إنما يؤشر إلى طبيعة الخلق في اللغة، وليس هناك من فرق بين المنطوق والمكتوب في وصفه بالخطاب، إذا تحققت فيه شروط يمكن إجمالها في (الإستدلال والإحتجاج وسرد الأدلة والبراهين والحوادث)، زيادة على أشياء أخرى يراها كثير من الباحثين ضرورية للخطاب.
فالخطاب من وجهة نظر بول ريكور هو (الواقعة اللغوية) التي تنطوي في تلافيف أبعادها العلائقية على بعد زمني معين زيادة على الحدث الذي تثبته هذه الواقعة، وهو (الإسنادية) في الإبقاء بالمعنى الذي تحويه تلك المنطوقات أو النصوص، أي أن محصلة نهائية يمكن القول عنها أن الخطاب هو مجموعة المقولات - شفاهية أو كتابية - التي تنطوي على بعد زمني وأحداث، تكون قادرة على نقل المعنى.
إن الخطاب في نهج البلاغة يمثل أيديولوجيا تنتظم عبر ممارسات غايتها الإخضاع غير القسري الذي لا يمكن أن تمارسه الخطابات الدكتاتورية أو تلك التي تصادر الرأي الآخر أو تسعى إلى مصادرته، ولكنها تؤسس لعملية إقناع عقلية تنشأ أساساً على جذر من الصدق والممارسة العلمية التي تتآلف مع المعتقد، وبذلك فهي تهيئ لرسوخ غير مهدد بالقلق أو القلقلة.
