إن الهدف من هذا الكتاب, من حيث المبدأ, هو أن يكون مساعداً للكتب المدرسية فى المعادلات التفاضلية الأولية. فالمرء يستطيع أن يجد جميع أنواع المعادلات التفاضلية العادية والجزئية فى مثل هذه الكتب المدرسية, بالإضافة إلى الطرق المختلفة لحل هذه المعادلات. ولكن بما أنه ينبغى على الطالب المبتدئ أن يتمكن تماماً من طرق حل أنواع مختلفة من المعادلات فإن هناك حاجة ماسة إلى كتاب شامل فى المسائل ككتابنا هذا. وفى الوقت الذى يقدم فيه الكتاب خدمة المهندسين المتمرسين فإنه يقدم خدمة لطلاب العلوم الذين يحسون بحاجة إلى مراجعة الدروس النظية والمسائل, وفى هذا الحقل الهام دائم الإتساع.
ولقد بدأنا كل فصل, بإستثناء الثالث, الذى هو بكامله شرح وتفسير, بعرض سريع التعاريف والمبادئ والنظريات, وأتبعنا ذلك بمجموعة من المسائل المحلولة والمسائل الإضافية غيرالمحلولة, ولقد تم إختيار هذه المسائل بحيث نحصل على دراسة دقيقة لكل منها بالقدر الذى تستحقه. ولقد بذلنا جهداً مماثلاً فى الفصول المخصصة التطبيقات, والتى تضم عدداً كبيراً من مسائل الهندسة وعلوم الفيزياء.
ويحوى الكتاب مادة أغزر مما يمكن أن تقدمه أكثر مقررات العادلات التفاضلية فى المرحلة الأولى. ولم نفعل ذلك لنجعل المدرس يجد حاجته من المواضيع التى يختارها فحسب, إنما لنثير إهتماماً إضافياً فى الموضوع ولنجعل بين يدى القارئ مرجعاً قريب التناول.
