الكتاب الذي أسعد اليوم بتقديمه لقراء العربية يشتمل على قسمين: أولهما، دراسة جادة للمترجم وضعها تحت عنوان "المقدمة"، وثانيهما الترجمة العربية لكتاب توديبود عن الترجمة الإنجليزية للأصل اللاتيني والتي قام بها الأمريكان جون هيوج هيل وقرينته لوريتا هيل، وفيما يتعلق بالقسم الأول، قدم لنا الدكتور حسين عطية دراسة موثقة تتضمن أربعة عناصر رئيسية مرتبطة ببعضها، خلص منها إلى تحديد مكانة توديبود بين غيره من مؤرخي الحملة الصليبية الأولى، وبخاصة أولئك الذيم كانوا شهود عيان لها، وهو واحد منهم فألقي الضوء على أهمية الكتاب وقيمته التاريخية الفائقة، الأمر الذي لم يتعرض له هيل وزوجته في مقدمتهما للترجمة الإنجليزية، كما تنازل العديد من القضايا الهامة التي أغلفها المترجمان الأمريكيان، وتوصل فيها إلى آراء واضحة محددة، ولا خلاف أن هذه الدراسة تضيف جديداً إلى توديبود ومؤلفه.
أما القسم الثاني وهو الترجمة العربية للكتاب، فأول ما يسترعي الإنتباه أنها ترجمة دقيقة بأسلوب عربي سليم، وقد تضمنت العديد من القضايا الهامة في الهوامش السلفية، مما لم يتعرض له هيل وزوجته، وخلاصة القول إن دراسة الدكتور حسين عطية وترجمته لمؤلف توديبود، يعتبران إضافة لها وزنها إلى المكتبة العربية للحروب الصليبية بصفة خاصة، ومكتبة العلاقات بين الشرق والغرب في العصر الوسيط بوجه عام.
