"في البدء كانت الحرية" كتاب للحقوقي والكاتب الصحفي "شريف رزق" يتضمن أكثر من خمسين مقالاً وورقة بحثية مقسمة عبر أربعة فصول هي: في البدء كانت الحُرِّية - تناقضات من واقع الحياة - الـمواطنة - كلام في السياسة، الكتاب يرسِّخ للحُرِّية باعتبارها القيمة الأهم في الحياة، وبمعناها الشامل غير المحدود، فاللامحدودية هي أصل فكرة الحُرِّية، فلا توجد حرية حين تُكبل بالقيود، وبدون الحُرِّية تصبح الحياة والموت متشابهين.
في الفصل الأول من الكتاب يبحث "شريف رزق" في علاقة الحرية بأهم القيم في الحياة، مثل: الإبداع والهوية والمعتقدات والمسؤولية والتغيير والآخر والتسامح والسعادة والفن، حيث يخلص إلى أن الحرية هي حجر الزاوية ومن خلالها تتحرك الحياة ونتحرك معها، في الفصل الثاني يتحدث عن تناقضات الحياة وعلاقتها بالحرية، مؤكدًا أنه كلما اقتربنا من مفهوم الحرية الحقيقية تقل تناقضاتنا، ونصبح أكثر تلقائية وبساطة وتصبح السعادة سهلة المنال رغم ما تعج به الحياة من مشكلات، وينتقل الكاتب في الفصل الثالث إلى البُعد السياسي/ الاجتماعي للحرية، من خلال مفهوم "المواطنة" باعتبارها أحد أهم مكونات السلام الاجتماعي، حيث تجمع كل روافد المجتمع الواحد لبناء دولة قوية، مؤكدًا أن الانتماء للوطن ليس فعل أوتوماتيكي، بل هو حركة متبادلة بين جميع الأطراف المكوِّنة للمجتمع، وغياب هذا المفهوم هو السبب في الوضع الكارثي الذي تعيشه مصر، والذي أدى إلى التعامل بمنطق القبيلة والأهل والعشيرة وأهل الثقة، فليس هناك من موقف ثابت يتعامل مع كل المواطنين وفقًا لمعايير القانون والمواطنة، يختتم شريف رزق كتابه في الفصل الرابع بمجموعة مقالات متنوعة، كانت قد نُشرت بصحيفة «المصري اليوم»، وتطرقت إلى الكثير من القضايا المتعلقة بحق المواطنة والتفكير المنطقي والحريات والواقعية السياسية، وعبر فصول الكتاب الأربعة، يلقي "شريف رزق" الضوء على العديد من رموز الحرية في التاريخ الإنساني، والذين حملوا مشاعل الحرية لينيروا للبشرية طريقها.
