كان وفد الأدباء يضم نجيب محفوظ ويوسف السباعى والشاعر صالح جودت والشاعر محمود حسن إسماعيل وأنا. وكنا عائدين إلى مصر, وجلسنا نتناقش ونحاول أن نفهم مل الذى حدث فى اليمن ولماذا نحن هناك وما الهدف وما النتيجة من هذه الحرب الدموية بين القوات المصرية والقوات الوطنية اليمنية, وكان اليمنيون لا يخفون ضيقهم بنا ويقارنون بين مصر وروسيا فى التعامل مع المواطن اليمنى, يقولون إن المصريين أتو إلينا ببسكو مصر بينما الروس أتوا بالأرز والسكر.. المصريون يقتلوننا والروس يجففون دموعنا ودماءنا.يعنى إيه؟ يعنى اننا أخطأنا عندما جئنا إلى هذه البلاد التى لا ناقة لنا فيها ولا جمل, ويجب ألا يكون.. يعنى حرب تعيسة البداية والنهاية, إن كانت لها نهاية. وفى هذه الأثناء وجدنا على ظهر الباخرة عدداً من المقاتلين المصريين فطلبنا أن نجلس إليهم.. وكان أكثرهم حديثاً المقاتل الضابط محمد فريد حجاج, فقد شرح لنا ما حدث وقدم لنا صورة موجزة ولكن ذات معنى كانت غائبة عند تماماً, فالذى رآه مختلفاً عن الذى رأيناه.. إنه قام بتصحيح كل المفاهيم العسكرية والسياسية وكان كلامه موجزاً, ولم يجد صعوبة فى تشكيل هذه الصورة الصعبة.والمقاتل الضابط محمد فريد حجاج مؤلف هذا الكتاب الهام والخطير, قد ارتاد مساحة هائلة من خريطة الشرق الأوسط ورغم المشكلات الكثيرة والمعقدة, إلا أنه أفلح فى ارتيادها بنجاح, ونجاحه كان بسبب فهمه العميق لما حدث, وذلك فهذا الكتاب يعتبر وثيقه هامة.. فالمؤلف رجل عسكرى جامعى اشترك فى كل حروب مصر, وعرف ما لم نعرف وفهم ما لم نفهم.. أما أسلوبه فهو جاد موجز بليغ. وما كتبه اللواء محمد فريد حجاج فى صفحة يحتاج من المحللين العسكريين إلى صفحات, ولكن لأنه يعرف ما يقول وأكثر, وأنه نظر إلى المواقع من بعيد, كانت نظرته أشمل وأعمق فى وقت واحد... أنيس منصور
