أثبت الأدب المقارن في السنوات الأخيرة أهميته كفرع من فروع المعرفة التي تأخذ بيد الناقد بين مجاهل النصوص الأدبية من أجل تفسيرها التي تأخذ بيد الناقد بين مجاهل النصوص الأدبية من أجل تفسيرها خاصة بعد أن تقلصت المسافات بين الأمم بفعل التطورات العلمية المذهلة التي تجعل من العسير على أمة أن تتقوقع على ذاتها مكتفية بما عندها من ثقافة. هذا لا يعني أن تذوب شخصية الأمة في شخصيات الأمم الأخرى، بل على الأمم أن تنهض بالأدب المقارن انطلاقاً من ثقافتها وتراثها.
وفي ضوء هذا يمكن للأدب المقارن أن يكون مفيداً وأن تنفى عنه صفة السلبية التي تلصقها به بعض الجهات التي لا ترى في العالم إلا ذواتها. إن من ينظر في الماء من أجل رؤية بعض أعماقه لا يرى إلا خياله مشوهاً ممسوخاً لأن ذلك لا يغني عن التجربة المباشرة التي تسمح بالاتصال المباشر مع جوهر الأشياء. ولذلك لا يحقّ لمن يرى عن بعد أنه يحكم على فائدة المثاقفة والأدب المقارن ومن هنا سيحاول المؤلف "غسان السيد" من خلال كتابه هذا أن يعرّف بهذا النوع من أنواع المعرفة الذي يساعد في التدقيق ملياً في أنفسنا قبل الانتقال إلى الآخرين.
وسيبدأ الكتاب بفصل نشوء الأدب المقارن وتطوره عالمياً وعربياً، عارضاً لوجهات النظر المختلفة التي حاولت أن تجتهد في توسيع أفقه ومجاله. وبعد أن يكون القارئ قد تزوّد بمعرفة كافية في المجال النظري ينتقل به إلى المجال التطبيقي. وسيكون موضوع حديثه في الفصل الثاني الحرية بين الكاتب السوري مطاع صفدي والكاتب والفيلسوف الفرنسي جان بول سارتر. وخصص الفصل الثالث للحديث عن المرأة في كتابات سارتر وكامو وسيمون وبوفوار من جهة ومن جهة أخرى كتابات مطاع صفدي وغادة السمان.
