إن الأمر يتعلق بمقولة نظرية يكشف تاريخها أنها غير قابلة للإختزال في معنى واحد ومفرد يحنطها ويفصلها عن معترك الحياة الزاخر بالإختلاف والصراع، وبذلك فإنه قد شكلت فضاءً رحباً لحوار العلمانيين العرب، والذين كشفوا من خلاله أولاً: عن العلمانية كمكسب حضاري إنساني وكوني، وبالتالي كمكان محايد يتسم بالرحابة والإتساع، إذ في إمكان جميع الشعوب والمفكرين إحتلال موقع خاص بهم فيه، كما كشفوا من خلاله ثانياً: عن عدم غرابة مفهوم العلمانية في المجتمع العربي الحديث والمعاصر، لأنه يعكس ما تعتمل في هذا المجتمع من صراعات حول سبل الإصلاح السياسي وتحقيق قيم الحداثة، ممثلة في الحرية، والديموقراطية، والعدالة، والعقلنة...
