In this dictionary we have aimed to provide accurate explanations of the words and phrases of Biology, Chemistry and Physics that a student may meet in any courses.
It has been our aim to use simple words in our definitions and explanations as far as this is possible and, as a further aid to the student, we have included many cross-references between definitions. All such cross-references have been indicated by the use of italics.
However we would ask all students to note:
1-Where, for example, the word 'polarized' is used in a definition and we wish to indicate a cross-reference to the dictionary entry which happens to be 'polarization' rather than the word 'polarized' itself, we have shown the cross-reference as… polarized (polarization)….
2-In the case of an entry for a phrase like 'alpha particle' where the words are always used in that order, we have not included an entry for the reverse order, i.e. 'particle, alpha'.
3-The very common words of science, e.g. electric current, have not been put in italics every time they have been used.
4-Diagrams can be located in the text by refering to their main subject.
5-Throughout the dictionary, the following abbreviations have been used: At. No. for Atomic Number and R.A.M for Relative Atomic Mass.
