هو عبارة عن رسالة بحث فيها المؤلف العلاّمة السيد محمد رضا فضل الله في موضوع الإمامة. ناقش "السيد" الفكرة من زاوية امتناع اهتداء البشر بالكتاب وحده، إذ لا بد للنبي أو من ينوب عنه من أن يبيّن الناس أحكام الكتاب، وما اختلفوا فيه، ولذلك احتاج الناس إلى رئيس مرشد وإمام هاد، يكون به نظام الدين وتمام أمر المسلمين، وعدم وجود هذا الإمام الذي ينوب عن النبي، يؤدي إلى الإختلاف والنزاع وظهور الفساد في البر والبحر، إذ لا يكفي وجود الكتاب في البيان دون مبيّن، وهنا يرى السيد أن النزاعات والإختلافات بين أبناء الأمة، وانقسامها إلى مذاهب يكفر بعضها بعضاً لهو أكبر دليل على الحاجة إلى من يبيّن للأمة أحكامها، ويمنع خصامها.
