يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ آل المهلب في المشرق الإسلامي ونشاطهم السياسي والحربي حتى قيام الدولة العباسية. وقد حاولت من خلاله إلقاء الضوء على هذه الأسرة العريقة التي كان لها دوراً مؤثراً في حركة الفتوحات الإسلامية في صدر الإسلام، كما تصدت لحركات المعارضة العنيفة ضد الدولة الأموية وكان لها مواقف مشرفة في الصراع ضد الخوارج الأزارقة الذين روعوا العالم الإسلامي في المشرق وآثاروا الذعر بين الخاصة والعامة.
وقد بدأت الكتاب بمدخل للتعريف بأحوال عمان قبيل الإسلام من حيث الموقع الجغرافي والنشاط التجاري والبحري بالإضافة إلى الأوضاع السياسية والدينية للتمهيد للدراسة عن آل المهلب.
وفي الفصل الأول حاولت إبراز دور أبي صفرة والد المهلب خلال عصر النبوة والخلافة الراشدة، وتناولت في الفصل الثاني: علاقة المهالبة بثورة عبد الله بن الزبير، أما الفصل الثالث: فقد تناولت فيه علاقة آل المهلب بالدولة الأموية منذ سنة 71هـ/690م وحتى القضاء على الأزارقة سنة 77هـ/696، أما الفصل الرابع: فقد تناولت فيه فترة ولاية المهلب على خراسان حتى وفاته سنة 82هـ701م، أما الفصل الخامس: فقد تناولت فيه تاريخ المهالبة منذ تولي قيادة الأسرة يزيد بن المهلب وحتى وفاة عمر بن عبد العزيز (101هـ/719م) وأوضحت أن المهالبة في هذه الفترة قد نالوا حظاً وافراً من القوة والنفوذ، أما الفصل السادس: فقد أوضحت فيه ثورة آل المهلب ضد الدولة الأموية وحللت الأسباب التي أثارت البيت الأموي ضد يزيد، وظروف الحرب الضارية التي خاضها يزيد ضد الأمويين، وأخيراً الخاتمة.
