يتمثل الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب بالأدب النظري المفصل في بيان ماهية الذات من حيث المفهوم والتطور التاريخي والأبعاد المؤثرة في مفهوم الذات وكذلك التقدير الذاتي.
الذات تشكل العامل الأساسي والفعال في نفس الفرد، فهي الأساس المكون له، وإذا ما أردنا أن نقوم بتقييم شخص ما فإننا سنركز بكل تأكيد على ذاته، لأن الفرد كلِّ منظم وليس مجموعة من الأجزاء، وعلى هذا يعتبر مفهوم الذات تعبير صادقاً عن هذا الإتجاه كما بينه علماء النفس.
الذات هي العامل الوحيد الذي يمكن للشخص من خلالها تمييز أفراد المجتمع، وحتى يتسنى للشخص فهم ماهية الفرد المقابل له، عليه القيام كخطوة أولى بدراسة ذاته، فهي تعتبر حجر الزاوية في شخصية الفرد.
وصورة الفرد المرتبطة بذاته تلعب أهمية كبيرة في تحديد مستقبله، لأن نظرة المجتمع تكون مرتبطة أساساً مع ذات الفرد وشخصيته، وعلى هذا فالذات هي أساس النفس، هي الخيرات والأفعال، هي الهيئة الجسدية والنفسية، هي الكل المعنوي المتحصن داخل الفرد، والذي يقوم بإرشاده إلى كيفية إدارة حياته.
