يعد الكاتب العراقي علي السوداني من أهم الكتَاب الذين أحدثوا منعطفات فنية، وعمقاً في الرؤية والالتقاط، في المجال القصصي، فالكتابة بالنسبة له معادلة للحياة ذاتها، وهذا ما يغني حضور الكاتب أو ما يجعل من الكاتب حاضراً في رعي الناس، وهو ما يظهر في "مكاتب عراقية.. من سفر الضحك والوجع" وهو إصدار يميل في ظاهره إلى السيرة الذاتية ولكنه ينأى عنها، إلى جنس أدبي آخر يعرف بـ "المقالة القصصية" التي يوصَف فيها علي السوداني مناخات وجوده العماني، ويلتف فيها إلى أيامه العراقية، وأحياناً يطلَ منها على وقائع/ مشاهد من الحياة الاجتماعية والثقافية والفنية العربية وما يتصل منها بأحوال الناس، إضافة إلى تصويره مشاهد عديدة مما تكتظ به الحياة البغدادية والعراقية عامة. في النص الموسوم بـ (حماقات: علي السوداني) نقرأ الإحباط والقنوط على وجه "المعلم حجي مكي" يردد: خرجت يوم العيد.. بملبسي طول اليوم.. إلى زمان النوم.. وواجب الانسان.. الرفق بالحيوان.. هذه كلاوات بكلاوات، كلاوات عراقية.. لا عيد ولا رمضان ولاسيادة ولا كهرباء ولا ما أدري شنو؟ (...)". ولعل هذه هي السمة الغالبة على مكاتيب علي السوداني وهو عكس الواقكما هو بلا زخرفة ولا رتوش وباللهجة الأقرب إلى وعي القارئ وهي ما تنضح به أقوال الناس، وسلوكاتهم اليومية وثقافتهم... لذلك يمكن القول أن (مكاتيب علي السوداني) حالة إبداعية عراقية بامتياز.
يضم الكتاب ما يزيد على مائة مقالة للكاتب نذكر من عناوينها: هذا بعض علي السوداني، تعلمت معلقات فوق حوائط البخل، بخلاء علي السوداني، ذو اليد المغلولة، رازونة بغداد... الخ.
