ذهبت مريم مبكرة إلى الكنيسة، جلست فى الصفوف الأولى كعادة كبار السن، هى ليست طاعنة، هزت رأسها لمن تجاورها كتحية هادئة، مرّ بهن الشماس، يبلغهن من أى المزامير يقرأن، القداس لم يبدأ بعد، هى صائمة، تنوى التناول، لقد مر أربعون يوما لم تتناول، تذكر هذا جيدا، اليوم أيضا يوافق ذكرى الأربعين لوفاة الصغيرة فيرونيكا، "فيرونيكا" ليست ابنتها، هى ابنة مادلين. تُمسك مريم بالكتاب فى يديها، هى لا تقرأ ما تراه، هى تتذكر قصة مادلين، كيف تزوجت ريمون ثم سافرت معه إلى الخارج، تاركة أمها الأرملة بمفردها فى منزل كبير، وكم بكت الأم ترجوها.. تستعطفها.. تتذلل لها ألا تتركها وحيدة هكذا، مادلين تطيب خاطر والدتها، لكنها مندفعة لتنفيذ فكرة السفر، وجملة كررتها مادلين كثيرا حتى حفظتها الأم الأرملة "ما إن نستقر ونرتب أحوالنا.. سنرسل إليك لتقيمى معنا"، قالتها مادلين قبل السفر، قالتها فى المطار، قالتها فى كل مكالمة تليفونية، كتبتها فى خطاباتها، وقبل أن تستقر مادلين فى حياتها خارج مصر رحلت الأم عن عالمنا، بكت مادلين يوم علمت بوفاة والدتها، بصعوبة جاءت لتحضر ذكرى الأربعين ثم سافرت مسرعة لترعى صغيرتها، تاركة لصاحب العقار قيمة إيجار عامين وأمّنت على شقتها وسافرت، لم ينقضِ العامان إلا وتوفى زوج مادلين، باعت ما استطاعت وشحنت ما رغبت فى الاحتفاظ به وعادت إلى القاهرة مع صغيرتها. يقف القس عند باب الهيكل فيقدمون له الحمل (الجسد، القربان) والقارورة (النبيذ، الدم) ليبدأ فى رفع الذبيحة. حلق مريم جاف وغصة تخنقها، تخشى أن تنفطر فى بكاء مر، تُخرج ورقة قد أعدتها ومكتوب فيها "فيرونيكا ريمون"، تضعها فى مظروف صغير، وتشير إلى أحد الشماسة ليحضر ويأخذ المظروف كى يُذكر اسم الصغيرة فى توقيت الترحُم على الموتى، مريم تشعر بوحدتها، مادلين أصرت على الذهاب إلى المقابر لتودع رفات صغيرتها مرة ثانية، ولم يشأ بطرس – زوج مريم – أن يجعلها تذهب بمفردها، فلقد صارت – مادلين – بعد طول عشرة كابنته تماما.
