كتبت فصول هذا الكتاب في "نوبة كتابة مكثفة" خلال أقل من عشرة أيام بمدينة بورسعيد في شهر أغسطس 1981، وجاء هذا الكتاب كثالث كتاب لي عن النظرية والتجارب المستقاة من الاشتراكية والتي كانت يتسمى نفسها بالاشتراكية العلمية، وبهذا الكتاب اختتمت مرحلة من مراحل التأليف في حياتي كان همي الأكبر أثناءها أن أظهر للقارئ العربي قدر المغالطة التي كنا سائرين فيها عندما كنا نعتقد أن الوفرة الإنتاجية والرواج الاقتصادي ستحققها الاشتراكية فيتحقق بذلك التطور المجتمعي والسلام الاجتماعي المنشودين.
ولكن تبقى لهذا الكتاب نكهة خاصة فهو وإن حوى من العلم الكثير - إلا أنه يبقى أقرب ما يكون لعمل أدبي قد يندرج تحت السيرة الذاتية قبل اندراجه تحت مسمى نقد الفكر الاشتراكي - ومن هنا يأتي اختلافه عن كل ما سبق للمؤلف كتابته عن الاشتراكية - وربما عن معظم ما كتبه الآخرون - فالمزاوجة بين العلم والتجربة أو بين الموضوعي والشخصي هي حجر الزاوية في هذا الكتاب، واعتقادي أن ذلك قد تم دون أن يجوز أي من الجانبين على الآخر، وها هي الطبعة الرابعة من هذا الكتاب الذي أثار لدى العديد من رموز الانتلجنتسيا المصرية والعربية، زوابعًا وعواصفًا خوجاء - ها هي تصدر بعد عشرين سنة بالتمام والكمال من لحظة كتابة آخر حرف فيه دون تغيير كلمة واحدة من كلمات نصه الأصلي.
