يشكل أدب الرحلات، مادة غنية وممتعة في التراث العربي القديم والحديث معاً وفي هذا العمل نطلع على رحلة الشيخ الأديب الشاعر "علي بن حسن الليثي" الذي كان أحد أهم علماء أدب التراجم في المشرق والمغرب معاً. وشاعر الحذيوي إسماعيل والحذيوي توفيق في ذلك العصر.
وهذه الرحلة "كانت بغرض توصيل أحد أبناء الحذيوي إسماعيل الى ألمانيا (برلين) بالذات لإدخاله أحد المدارس العسكرية، وأنها شملت النمسا وألمانيا في الفترة من 17 ذي الحجة سنة 1292 الى أن عاد الشيخ الليثي في 20 محرم 1292، أي الموافق (26 يناير - 28 يناير فبراير 1875) واستغرقت 33 يوماً كما ذكر الأستاذ الزركلي".
وتجدر الاشارة هنا، الى أن الاستاذ الشاعر السفر خير الدين الزركلي هو الذي ترجم للشيخ الليثي، وهذه الرحلة استقر بها النوى لدى جامعة الملك سعود في المملكة العربية السعودية. وهي عبارة عن مخطوطة مهمة نسخت بخط الليثي واشتملت على ملحوظات وطرائف، نذكر منها قوله في وصف مسجد بنته واشتملت على ملحوظات وطرائف، نذكر منها قوله في وصف مسجد بنته الحكومة المصرية في فيينا": "لم يفقد شيئاً من محاسن المساجد، إلا إقامة شعائره التي هي ثمرة بنائه". وفي كلامه على العربات: "وعربات تجرها الكلاب تحمل ما يعجز عن حمله أشد حمار". وغير ذلك كثير.
