لا شك أن المراجع التي تناولت أسباب نزول القرآن الكريم كثيرة جداً، وإن لم تذكر أسباب النزول باليوم والليلة في أكثر الحالات لصعوبة ضبط ذلك. إلا أنها استطاعت ذكر السبب في الحادثة المصاحبة له، فما يسهل معرفة تاريخه بالشهر والسنة على الأقل. وكتاب "أسباب النزول" لأبي علي الفضل بن الحسن الطبرسي يأتي في هذا الباب حيث يفسر أسباب نزول آيات وسور القرآن الكريم واحدة تلو الأخرى ويبدأ بـ "سورة البقرة" وانتهاءً بـ "سورة الفلق" مبيناً وجوه الإختلاف في تفسير أسباب نزول كل آية على نحو قوله: وقيل نزلت في... وقيل نزلت في كذا... مع وضع تفسيره هو، دون أن ينكر أو يخطأ أحد من المفسرين السابقين، أو اللاحقين ولكن، فقط شرح الإختلاف في سبب نزول الآية، والرواية والحديث التي تؤكدها فيما نزلت.
هذا، وقد سبق تفسير أسباب النزول مقدمة أعدها المحقق عن الشيخ الطبرسي جاءت بقلم الإمام السيد محسن الأمين العاملي تتضمن أقوال العلماء في الشيخ الطبرسي وأهم إنجازاته وما احتوى عليه كل مصنف من مصنفاته ونبذ عن حياته.
