بين يدي القارىء كتاب جليل، يعتبر من المصادر القيمة في موضوعه وذلك لما يشتمل عليه من احتجاجات النبي والأئمة، بل كثير من أصحابهم الأمجاد مع جملة من الأشقياء المخالفين. والذي دعا المؤلف وهو العلامة "أبي منصور أحمد الطبرسي" وهو من علماء القرن السادس، إلى تأليف كتابه هو عدول جماعة معرف عنها الاحتجاج عن سبيل الجدال" وقولهم "أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم والأئمة عليهم السلام، لم يجادلوا قط، ولا استعملوه، ولا للشيعة فيه إجازة، بل نهوهم عنه وعابوه".
ولذلك رأى عمل كتابه هذا الذى يحتوي على ذكر جمل من محاوراتهم في الفروع والأصول مع أهل الخلاف، وذوي الفضول. إذا فالمؤلف اندفع إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب بدافع العقيدة لينير للمتخبطين بطريقة الغواية، نور الهداية والخير، ويبسط ما وسعه الحال عن جميع ما يتعلق بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، واتباعهم وليكشف لذوي اللجاج مدى المكانة العالية، التي تتمتع بها هذه الصفوة.
أما منهج الطبرسي (المصنف) في تأليف كتابه الاحتجاج، فقد أوضحه بنفسه في مقدمة كتابه المذكور يقول: "وأنا ابتدئ في صدر الكتاب بفصل ينطوي على ذكر آيات من القرآن التي أمر الله تعالى بذلك أنبياءه بمحاجة ذوي العدوان، ويشتمل أيضاً على عدة أخبار في فضل الذابين عن دين الله، وصراطه المستقيم بالحجج والبراهين، ثم نشرح في ذكر طرف من مجادلات النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم والأئمة عليهم السلام، وربما يأتي في أثناء كلامهم كلام جماعة من الشيعة، حيث تقتضب الحال ذكره ولا نأتي من أكثر من نودرة من الأخبار باستفادة أما لوجود الإجماع عليه أو موافقته لما دلت عليه العقول إليه، أو الاشتهارة في السير والكتب المخالف والمؤلف، إلا ما أوردته عن أبي محمد الحسن العسكري، فإنه ليس في الاشتهار على حد سواه".
