من الناس من يأخذ على هذا الكتاب أنّه يحمل الشباب على الإنتحار، ويرغّبهم فيه، ويستدلّ على ذلك بالعدد الوافر الّذي انتحر من الشباب في ألمانيا وفرنسا وغيرهما من بلاد أوروبا عند قراءته.
ويخيّل إليّ أنّ هؤلاء لم يوفّقوا إلى القصد ولم يهتدوا سواء السبيل. هب أنّ الكتاب قد ساء أثره حيناً ما فإنّ هناك حقيقة ليس لإنكارها من سبيل: هي أنّ الكتاب قد بلغ من الجمال والروعة مبلغاً يلزم كل محبّ للفنّ أن يقرأه، ونزل من آثار الفنّ الحديث منزلة توجب على كل أستاذ من أساتذة الأدب أن يقف عليه، على أنّي أعتقد أنّ ما كان من سوء أثر الكتاب عند ظهوره قد بولغ فيه وأسرف الناس في وصفه؛ فإنّما أساء بعض الشباب ذوي النفوس المريضة فهمه والإستفادة منه، لأنّ ظروف الحياة الإجتماعيّة كانت من الشدّة والضيق في أوروبا بحيث تجعل نفوس كثير من الناس ضعيفة رخوة، وخانعةً مستسلمة، لا تستطيع مقاومةً ولا إحتمالاً، وآية ذلك أن الأب لا يزال يُقرأ ويُدرّس، بل هو الآن يمثّل في الملاعب، ويغنّى في دور الموسيقى من غير أن يُحدث من سوء الأثر وقبح العاقبة ما أحدثه حيناً ما.
