وجد الشعب الكوردي في وطنه كوردستان منذ آلاف السنين، والكورد شعب مُقسَّمٌ بين الدول إيران - تركيا - عراق - سوريا، وهو أكثر من 50 مليون نسمة، وسبب هذا التقسيم يعود إلى إتفاقيات جالديران 1514 وسايكس بيكو 1916، وقد ظل مقسماً إلى الآن دون رضاه وخلافاً لرغبته، ودون أن ينال حقوقه القانونية والإنسانية المشروعة (الحق في تقرير المصير)، الذي تم إقراره صراحة في القانون الدولي، وفي العهد الملحق بالإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان.
وظل (شعباً بلا دولة)، رغم أن معاهدة سيفر لعام 1920 نصت على حق الشعب الكوردي في دولته المستقلة، وتعرض الكورد إلى جرائم دولية خطيرة من أنظمة الحكم المختلفة، وقد ناضل الشعب الكوردي نضالاً سلميّاً ثم نضالات مسلحاً، دفاعاً عن حقه في الحياة والوجود، وطبقاً لقرارات الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة التي اعترفت صراحة بشرعية النضال المسلح للشعوب المستعمرة والأجنبية.
