يعتبر الإمام المستور أحمد بن عبد الله بن محمد بن إسماعيل بن جعفر الصادق مصنف هذه الرسالة من ألمع أئمة دور الستر الأول، وأكثرهم علماً، ساهم في الحركة الفكرية التي ظهرت في العصر العباسي، مساهمة فعالة فوضع كتابه المعروفة باسم (رسالة إخوان الصفا وخلان الوفا) رغبة منه في المحافظة على شريعة جده الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وحتى لا تطغى البدع الفلسفية التي راجت في عهد الخليفة العباسي المأمون على التفكير الإسلامي الصحيح، ومن المؤكد بأن الحركات الباطنية التي ظهرت في الإسلام على أسس دينية جعلوا من هذا المؤلف من رسائل إخوان الصفا وخلان الوفا المدماك الأساسي لمعتقداتهم الفلسفية التوحيدية التي أصبحت صدى لما يتفاعل في الحياة الإسلامية في كافة مراحلها، في المعرفة والأخلاق، والسلوك الاجتماعي، والإخاء الواعي، المؤمن الموحد، السالك في معارج الحقيقة، ولا نذهب بعيداً إذا قلنا بأن رسائل "إخوان الصفا وخلان الوفا" قد شغلت حيزاً من تفكير العلماء والباحثين خلال حقبة طويلة من الزمن، ولا تزال حتى اليوم مثاراً للجدل، والتخمين والاستنتاج الذي قلما يكشف الستار عن الحقائق العرفانية الباطنية، والرموز العويصة، والإشارات السرية، لما أسدل حولها من ستائر كثيفة أضفت عليها التقيد والغموض الذي حيّر الناس وملأ الدنيا بالاستفسارات والتساؤلات.
وفي هذا الكتاب يقوم المحقق من هذه الرسائل "الرسالة الجامعية" التي لخص فيها الإمام احمد بن عبد الله رسائل "إخوان الصفا وخلان الوفا"، والتي تعتبر تاج تلك الرسائل لما تضمنته من علوم ومعارف عقلانية، وفلسفة توحيدية، ونظريات تأويليه باطنية، مليئة بالرموز والإشارات، الهادفة إلى تبيان بعض الأمور الخفية، والحكم والأسرار الإبداعية، التي تتفجر من خلالها للمطلع أنهار العلوم والمعارف والحكم والأسرار، ليشرب من نهر الديمونة، الذي يشع نوره الشعشعاني فيضيء وجوده الحقاني، ويشعر بعدها بالساعة القصوى، ويرتشف من رحيق العشق الإلهي، حتى تذوب نفسه بالنور العقلاني، وتستمد من إمدادات القبس الرباني، ولتذوب ذاته بالتجريد الوجداني، والبهاء المعرفاني.
