يمثل هذا الكتاب المجلّد الأوّل من بحث معمّق في تاريخ اليمن منذ البدايات إلى ظهور الممالك المستقلّة، ويتعلّق بالذات بتلك البدايات مع بلقيس ملكة سبأ في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد وبتأسيس دولة يمنيّة قويّة وموحّدة تمكّنت من بناء حضارة عريقة وحياة إقتصاديّة وإجتماعية وثقافية راقية، ثمّ دخل القطر في صراع مع قوى خارجيّة، بعضها جاء غازياً طمعاً في خيرات اليمن السعيد (الفرس) وبعضها الآخر باسم الدين المسيحيّ عام الفيل (كالأحباش وزعيمهم أبْرهة).
وبعد الفتح الإسلامي نجمت قضايا أخرى كالرّدة وحركات التمرّد والعصيان والمشاركة في الفتنة الكبرى بين العلويّين والأمويّين إلى أن انفردت بعض الممالك بالحكم، وهذا ما سيكون موضوع المجلد الثاني بعنوان "اليمن الإسلاميّ: من معاوية إلى المأمون".
