تقول الشاهنامة بأنه في البدء، تلك العالم كله تلك يدعى جيو مرت، وقد خصه الله بعناية فائقة، فبالإضافة غلى قوته وشهامته، حباه الله جمال الوجه وببهاء الطلعة. وجعل مركز إقامته في الجبال، ومنه انتشرت الحضارة في العالم. وارتدى جيومرت جلد النمر، فكان سبّاقاً في هذه البدعة، لأن الثياب كالطعام تماماً لم تكن قد عرفت بعد. كان جميع الإنس والجن يخضعون لمشيئته،فازداد عظمة وجبروتاً مما أدى إلى انبثاق الديانة.
وكان لجيومرت الملك، ابن يدعى سيامك، أحبّه حباً جمّا،ً وربّاه تربية جديرة بالملوك، فمحافظاً عليه، مبعداً إياه عن كل أعمال الجن والسحر، فلما نشأ وظهرت منه بوادر السلطنة، ظهر له عدو من الجن، أخذ يتتبع تنقلاته وأفعاله، قاصداً إهلاكه. فلما علم بذلك قرر محاربة ذلك الجني، فنزل لملاقاته لابساً جلد النمر. لكن الجني سرعان ما أنشب مخالبه في صدر سيامك، فأرداه قتيلاً غير آبه بجمال منظره، وجلال طلعته، وملك أبيه الواسع.
علم ملك الملوك جيومرت بموت وحيده، فحزن عليه حزناً شديداً وتدفقت مشاعره أنيناً متواصلاً، وزفيراً ملتهباً، ودموعاً ساخنة جرت الدماء. وجاء جميع القوم يشاركونه فجيعته، وبقي على تلك الحال سنة كاملة. وكان لسيامك ولد يدعى أوشهنج، سلمه جده مقاليد الزعامة والحكم. وقررا معاً مقاتلة الجن على رأس جيش مؤلف من الجن والحيوانات الضارية والأليفة. وبعد معركة ضارية جرت بينهما، استطاعت الوحوش الفتك بالجني وأردته قتيلاً. وبذلك يكون الانتقام لدم سيامك قد تم على أكمل وجه.
مات جيومرت بعد ثلاثين سنة من الملك، وبقي أوشهنج ملكاً، ذا رأي رصين، محافظاً على سمات العظمة التي انتقلت إليه عبر أسلافه، ذات يوم بينما كان أوشهنج على سفح أحد الجبال، ظهرت له حبّة عيناها كبرك الدم، ولهيبها دخان أسود يغطي العالم بدكنته، فتناول حجراً، ورماه بها لدرء خطرها، فاصطدم الحجز من قوة الضربة بصخور الجبل وأحدث باصطدامه شعلة متوهجة. فأفلتت الحية، وكانت النار شر أوشهنج باكتشافه، فسجد شاكراً ربه تعالى على تلك النعمة، متخذاً النار قبلة، وهذا سبب تعظيم النار عند القرى.
وهكذا تمضي الملحمة في أحداثها كاشفة عن الأصل معتقدات الفرس، ومنشأ عاداتهم وتقاليدهم. والتي ما زالت متداخلة مع معتقدات القرى إلى يومنا هذا. والملحمة هي عمل أدبي للشاعر الفارسي الفردوسي، وهي كإلياذة وأوديسة الشاعر الإغريقي هوميروس واينادة الشاعر الروماني فرجيل وملحمة الهند الكبرى المهابهاراته.
