ليس العرفان منهجاً غريباً عن الفكر الإسلامي، بل هو مذهب فكري وفلسفي يسعى إلى معرفة الله تبارك وتعالى، أو معرفة حقائق الأمور، وأسرار العلوم، وله كغيره أدواته ووسائله ومناهجه التي تقوم على "منهج الإشراق والكشف والشهود". وفي كتاب "العطش العرفاني" يبحث عبد الرحيم الحمراني عن مفهوم العرفان وكيفية العمل به وفق ما جاء عند "آية الله السيد علي القاضي" فيبدأ بنبذة عن حياة السيد علي القاضي وأحواله واستقامته في العبودية ما يقارب الأربعين سنة في البحث عن الله بطريق العارف المؤمن، بالإضافة إلى حكاياته وسيرته وكراماته وعباداته ورأي أهل زمانه به. كتب آية الله الميزراعي أكبر مندي – أحد تلامذة السيد علي القاضي – في رسالة كتبها إلى العلامة الطباطبائي "من عاشر السيد القاضي سوف لن يرغب بالدنيا ولا الآخرة وسيكون همه وغمه في الوصول إلى الله". وقال آية الله السيد هاشم الكشميري "إننا لنعيش حين ندخل على السيد القاضي حالة من الإنبساط الروحي وانشراح القلب بحيث تغيب عنا كافة المشاكل والمصاعب اليومية التي تواجهنا في حياتنا".
يتناول هذا الكتاب بالشرح السيرة العرفانية لأهل البيت، وضرورة المرشد، والسلوكات (الطقوس الدينية) التي توصل المؤمن إلى مقام العرفان، ويقدم نماذج متعددة لمن وصل لهذا المقام من أئمة أهل بيت النبوة، ويشرح مفهوم الولاية، ومفهوم الوصية، ويختتم بعدد من الحوارات التي أجراها المؤلف مع السيد محمد حسن القاضي، والسيد محمد علي قاضي نيا، بالإضافة إلى حوار مع السيدة فاطمة القاضي، وحوار آخر مع آية الله السيد عباس الكاشاني، وأخيراً حوار مع آية الله محمد علي الحكيم.
