هذه الموسوعة خلاصة جهد متواصل لتوثيق حركة الفنون الجميلة المصرية على مدى يزيد على ثلاثة عقود.. وقفت العديد من الصعاب في وجه تقديم هذه الموسوعة بعضها من أشخاص مغرضين وبعضها من ظروف صعبة غير مواتية.. لكن الوقت لم يفت بعد، والجهد المتواصل أتاح إصدارها بهذا الشمول والموسوعية.. ويضم الجزء الأول فناني الجيلين الأول والثاني..
ويضم الجيل الأول الفنانين الذين ولدوا قبل بداية القرن العشرين وتعلموا على أيدي الفنانين الأجانب.. وقد ساد الاعتقاد لسنوات أن هذا الجيل يضم سبعة فنانين فقط، هم محمود مختار، وراغب عياد، ويوسف كامل، ومحمد حسن، وأحمد صبري.. وهم الذين درسوا الفن بمدرسة الفنون الجميلة عقب افتتاحها عام 1908م بالإضافة إلى محمود سعيد ومحمد ناجي من أبناء الأرستقراطية المصرية بالاسكندرية.
ويضم الجيل الثاني الفنانين الذين ولدوا ابتداء من مطلع القرن العشرين (عام 1900) حتى الحرب (العظمى) العالمية الأولى (1914- 1918) وقد اعتبرنا منتصف الحرب العظمى (عام 1916) نهاية لهذا التحديد.
وقد اخترنا الترتيب الميلادي حتى يتابع القارئ تتابع الأجيال، بينما الترتيب الأبجدي يحرم القاري من التتابع التاريخي.. وتركنا للباحث الوصول إلى الفنان أو المرحلة التي ينشدها عن طريق الفهرس الأبجدي في نهاية كل جزء من الموسوعة..
