قد عُرف علماء وفقهاء مدرسة أهل البيت عليهم السلام بالتأليف والتصنيف منذ الصدر الأول للإسلام، ويكفيك تصفّح الفهارس المستوعبة لترى بُعد همتهم في هذا المضمار، وعلوّ شأنهم، وسبق سعيهم لهذا الهدف، الذي هو مقصد لأهل العقول والوعاية، فكيف به إذا وجد من عيبة علم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأوصيائه العناية والرعاية، حيث استفاض عنهم عليهم السلام الحث على تقييد العلم بالكتابة حتى بان فضل بعض أصحابهم بالتصنيف في العلم في وقت مبكر، فمن بعض التصانيف التي كانت معروفة في زمن الأئمة عليهم السلام كتاب الصلاة لحريز السجستاني، وبعضهم قد تشرّف بتقريض بعض الأئمة عليهم السلام لتصنيفه ككتاب عبيد الله الحلبي الذي عُرض على الإمام الصادق، وكتاب يوم وليلة ليونس بن عبد الرحمن الذي عرض على الإمام العسكري، ثمَّ توالت تصانيف العلماء حتى امتلأت بيوت الشيعة - قبل زمن غيبة الإمام الثاني عشر - بكتب بعض علمائهم، ناهيك عن كثير من الروايات الشريفة التي تظهر مكنون اهتمام أئمة أهل البيت بإرجاع الشيعة إلى الثقات من الرواة، وحكايتهم لبعض الأحكام والسنن المدوّنة في كتب محفوظة عندهم، ككتاب علي عليه السلام الذي كانوا يتوارثونه وهو بإملاء رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وهذه الرسالة التي يقدمها هذا الكتاب بحلّة التحقيق شاهد صدق على ما تقول، فإن مؤلفها الفقيه الخليل علي بن الحسين بن موسى بن بابويه قدس الله نفسه من أشهر الفقهاء في اوائل القرن الرابع، وهو والد الثقة الجليل ركن الطائفة الشيخ الصدوق محمد بن علي بن الحسين، وقد عاش المؤلف في أواسط القرن الثالث، وكانت وفاته نهاية الثلث الأول من القرن الرابع عام 329هـ.
