يشتمل هذا الكتاب على قسمين: الأول خاص بسيكولوجية المعاقين، والثاني خاص بالمتفوقين. ولا انفصال في الحقيقة بين الفئتين، وإنما هناك تقاطع وتداخل؛ فبعض المعاقين متفوقون، وبعض المتفوقين معاقون. وتفسير ذلك أن المعاق بدنيًا قد يتفوق عقليًا، والمتفوق عقليًا قد يعاني من الإعاقة النفسية وسوء التوافق.
وفهم سيكولوجية المعاقين قد يكون سبيلنا إلى فهم الأسوياء المعافين، خاصة وأن السوية لا وجود لها بالمعنى المطلق؛ فالسوية في صيغتها الواقعية هي الدرجة الأدنى من العصابية. أما فهم سيكولوجية المتفوقين فهو سبيلنا إلى الإرتقاء بهم وتجاوز مشكلاتهم.. الارتقاء بستواهم الأكاديمي والإبداعي، وتجاوز ما قد ينشأ لديهم من مشكلات إنفعالية، نرى من أسبابها العجز عن فهمهم، وسوء نظم إدارة فصولهم، وفوق ذلك عدم توافر الأجواء التي تثير اهتماماتهم وتتحدى قدراتهم.
